Editorial Summary
The City of Lexington has officially reopened Phoenix Park following a $4.6 million redevelopment project aimed at transforming the long-neglected downtown space into a modern, family-friendly urban destination.
Located at the intersection of Main and Limestone streets, the newly reimagined park now features upgraded playgrounds, an expanded dog park, shade structures, seating areas, a raised performance stage, and Lexington’s first-ever self-cleaning public restroom.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Linda Gorton highlighted the symbolic importance of the project and its impact on downtown life:
“Phoenix Park is living up to its name and has risen like the mythical phoenix with new life. With these updates and first-in-Lexington features, it not only revitalizes this downtown park, but it makes it a destination for families to visit.”
The self-cleaning restroom, located near Limestone Street, drew significant attention during the reopening event. Equipped with exterior indicator lights that signal availability and cleaning cycles, the facility is designed to provide a reliable, hygienic, and secure public amenity in a high-traffic area.
City Councilmember Hannah LeGris, whose district includes downtown, noted that the city deliberately waited to adopt a self-cleaning restroom until a proven, reliable solution was available:
“It’s more than just a public space. It’s an investment in a stronger, safer and more connected downtown.”
The Phoenix Park project reflects Lexington’s broader commitment to revitalizing public spaces and investing in infrastructure that enhances user experience while supporting long-term urban resilience.
