Introduction
Rose Valley Park is one of Oshawa’s newest landmark public spaces. The site includes a playground, pickleball courts, a formal garden, walking trails, and an upgraded BMX park. With very high expected attendance, the City needed to provide essential services capable of keeping pace—while remaining operational year-round.
The challenge
Before installation, several challenges were identified:
- High visitor volume, particularly during peak seasons
- The need for a true four-season solution adapted to Ontario’s climate
- A large, multifunctional park requiring a central, durable, and reliable restroom
- The City’s objective to offer a clean, safe citizen experience aligned with the modern image of the site
The installed solution
In September 2025, the City of Oshawa selected a dual-cabin Urben Blu self-cleaning public restroom, including:
- Two self-cleaning restroom cabins
- A rear staff workspace for municipal personnel
- An integrated heated concrete slab enabling winter operation
- A robust, durable design that significantly reduces maintenance needs
This configuration directly addressed both operational and public works requirements.
Observed results
Since installation, several positive outcomes have been observed:
- Significantly improved cleanliness due to self-cleaning technology
- Reduced maintenance requirements, freeing up staff time
- High satisfaction among municipal employees, who now have an integrated work area
- Reliable year-round operation
- Enhanced city image through modern, well-integrated infrastructure
- Increased capacity to support a rapidly growing recreational site

Conclusion
By installing a smart public restroom designed for a modern, high-traffic park, Oshawa made a strong and forward-looking decision.
This project positions Rose Valley Park as an accessible, durable, and future-ready public space—while serving as a model for other municipalities looking to improve the citizen experience.
